Google really doesn't want you using these Grandfathered accounts. but I wasn't using that domain in the account anyway (but now I never can if I decided to change things in the future. I actually removed one of my 'secondary domains' (because I already had 2) to see if I could add it back, and I could not. You can no longer change your primary domain OR add any new secondary domains sadly. You're correct you can still add domain aliases (which will work for mail once you setup MX records) but will still have residual details about the 'primary domain' within mail headers. Yeah I literally just got done verifying this in 2 of my accounts. Not quite as good as changing primary domain as there's traces of the primary domain in the mail headers etc but it kind of works if you're not that bothered about the technical side. There's also new restrictions on secondary domains but I think domain aliases still can be added.
